Airport security staff are used to seeing some odd shapes when they X-ray parcels... but the contents aren’t usually alive.

When they opened up a package marked “fragile” they found a rare albino reticulated python.

Post office workers had unwittingly passed the 8ft snake around for eight hours before it was about to be put on a plane at Stansted airport in Essex.

The animal’s owner from nearby Harlow had sold it on the internet and was sending it to the buyer in Exeter – in a breach of Royal Mail rules on transporting live animals.

RSPCA inspector Steve Reeves said: “All the machine picked up was that there was something organic in the shape of a snake – so they must have got quite a shock when they opened up the package.”

He added: “Snakes are very sensitive to their environment. It could suffer if it was put into a cold place like an airplane hold.”

RSPCA officer Sophie Adwick said: “This python has specialised needs and is not some object to be tossed into the mail so thoughtlessly.”

The new owner is having the snake picked up by a specialist courier.
