Hemel - Deal on old mail sorting depot 'within weeks'

A DEAL deciding the future of the former mail depot in Hemel Hempstead could be announced within weeks.

The site has been vacant since Royal Mail completed a phased move to its new centre in Maxted Road last month.

The 3.46 acre Park Lane property is being marketed as a ‘prominent redevelopment opportunity’ with offers invited ‘in the region of £3.25 million’.

Darren Cheeseman, of property firm DTZ, said: “The site is under offer and we are hoping it will go through in the next few weeks or months.

“We have had interest from a whole gamut of people from industrial to retail.”

Royal Mail has centralised sorting operations across Watford, Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead at the state-of-the-art Maxted Road base.

However, the closure of sorting offices in Berkhamsted and Kings Langley have proved controversial, with promises that people would still be able to collect parcels at these offices not kept.
