Chivers concern over H.E. rent payment move from PO

Sinn Féin councillor Brenda Chivers has expressed her disappointment that as from next month Housing Executive tenants will no longer be able to pay their rent at the post office.

Colr. Chivers said: “This is yet another erosion of the product service portfolio available from the post office. It will be particularly inconvenient in isolated rural communities. Many people do not have their own transport and will be dependant on the support of family and friends for a lift into the nearest bank. An above average number of residents in the North do not actually have a bank account. This is yet another government department taking business away from the post office network instead of making every effort to support post offices which are at the hub of rural communities across the country.”

Colr. Chivers said earlier in the month her party colleague Michelle O’Neill MLA, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development launched proposals to address rural poverty.

“I will be meeting with her to investigate whether we can include protection of rural post offices in that strategy. If we lose the services offered by rural post offices it would not only affect rural poverty but also the quality of life for people living in rural areas.”

I thought the HE used PayPoint for their payments :hmmmm anyway, there are loads of those about is probably the answer they'll get from the HE if they ask.

ps. Did anyone ever think they'd see the day when SF would be actually involved in trying to save the PO when the IRA spent most of the 70s and 80s trying to blow up the entire fleet of vans (although they were all Sherpas so they may have had a point).
