Southwark Council brought forward the proposal after posters on the London SE1 forum highlighted the difficulty in parking legally near Royal Mail's Southwark Delivery Office when collecting parcels.

The forum discussion was sparked by complaints from motorists who had been fined by the council when stopping outside the enquiry office in Mandela Way.

Labour council leader Peter John responded to the forum thread and promised to ask council officers to come up with a solution.

"To provide convenient parking and following complaints about lack of existing provision, it is recommended to install four 20-minute time-limited parking bays directly outside the Royal Mail enquiry office," says a report by transport officer Paul Gellard.

"The bays will operate Monday to Saturday 8am to 6.30pm to match the adjacent waiting restrictions."

The free parking bays will have a "no return within two hours" rule.

The Liberal Democrat-controlled Bermondsey Community Council unanimously backed the proposals last Wednesday night.

Now that the the community council has given its backing to the scheme, officers will prepare a draft traffic management order. A public notice will be displayed in Mandela Way and published in the Southwark News and London Gazette giving notice of the proposed change to parking arrangements.

If any formal objections are received a further report will be submitted to the community council for a final decision.
