A SPECIAL tribute has been paid to one of Redditch's longest serving postmen.

Mick Johnson passed away on Thursday, January 5 after collapsing while making his deliveries. The 62-year-old had worked for Royal Mail for 38 years after joining in 1973 and for at least 25 of those delivered to the rural areas on the outskirts of Redditch.

Roger Jennings, who worked with Mr Johnson for 15 years, called him the 'ideal postman' while residents he served have described him as helpful, friendly and 'part of the community'.

Ahead of the Lakeside resident's funeral on Wednesday (January 18) the funeral procession completed a lap of Redditch Delivery Office at the request of his family. Staff also lined the streets of Fishing Line Road as a mark of respect.

Paul Mullen, delivery office manager, said Mr Johnson was a dedicated professional who loved his job.

"He hardly ever had any time-off, you would have to twist his arm literally to get him to take holiday because he loved being at work," he said.

"His nickname was flash because he was very much old school and did everything in his own time. He was always the last one back but he never booked any overtime for it, he just did his job and he did it well.

"He was a very likeable guy, he never gave me a minute's trouble. He just loved his job so much. There aren't many that will do almost 40 years.
