A franking dilemma

Sir – One speaks as one finds, and I wish to praise the Royal Mail and its staff for their superb efforts throughout the Christmas period.

However, I have a moral dilemma. Of the 46 Christmas cards delivered by Royal Mail, 14 had unfranked stamps on the envelopes; three first class at 46p (£1-38) and 14 second class at 36p (£5-04) a total of £6.42. This represents approximately 40 per cent of the delivery.

If I reuse these stamps, as I will, I am effectively defrauding Royal Mail by this amount. It doesn’t seem much but, if replicated across the country, it represents a huge loss in their overall revenue.

But that’s their problem. My problem is that there is no mechanism, as far as I am aware, for refunding the money to Royal Mail; apart, that is, from discarding the stamps and standing in another queue to purchase their replacement.

I have therefore donated £6.50 to charity.

What would you do?

I wouldn't commit a deliberate act of fraud for the sake of £5-04.
Knowing you will get away with a crime doesn't make it any less of a crime.
It's called having a moral compass, knowing the difference between right and wrong without needing an ink stamp to tell you what to do.
Next thing he'll be helping himself from the collection plate at church. :cuppa
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Unfranked stamps are a bugbear of mine! The amount I have on a daily basis is unbelievable and I do try to cancel them either on my prep or out on my delivery but sometimes there are just too many! This costs RM a small fortune every day, but they don't want to, or can't, see it!

I've been drawing wavy lines through mine whilst walking between doors since last Easter, but there's far too many coming through to manually cancel them all. As with revision planners, I imagine more money could have been saved by not paying someone to come up with these tamper-proof stamps.
The machine stops.
