Shrewsbury Royal Mail workers miss out over pay

More than 50 temporary employees at the Royal Mail sorting office in Shrewsbury in the run-up to Christmas were not paid for a week’s work, it was claimed this afternoon.

Mac McHugh, of Church Stretton and a temporary seasonal worker at the sorting office, said he should have had £150 on Friday but he checked his account and the cash wasn’t there.

He said between 50 and 60 temporary workers at the sorting office had experienced a similar problem.

Today the Royal Mail said difficulties with the payroll system were to blame for leaving some of the 134 temporary staff in the sorting office in Castlefields unpaid but officials could not confirm exactly how many.

A spokesman said: “Difficulties with the payroll system meant some temporary workers regrettably were not paid on time or by the correct amount last week.

“We apologise for the difficulties that this situation has caused to a minority of our temporary workers.”

This is confusing, and interesting, because a manager from Shrewsbury was over to Wellington around 3.30 on Tuesday to dish out £350 bar-coded vouchers to casuals from Wellington who had not been paid a penny so far.
