Temporary Royal Mail workers at Carlisle’s sorting office are still waiting for unpaid wages, despite being promised they would receive them yesterday.

Royal Mail said it had arranged for deliveries of vouchers, which can be cashed in at post offices, to be made across the north west after problems with its payroll system left casual staff unpaid.

But one of the affected Carlisle staff, Samantha Foster, said this morning she had not received the promised payment.

She added: “We did not receive our cheques yesterday. Having called them at several points through the day, we got a phone call late in the evening to inform us that the cheques will hopefully be arriving before midday today.”

Some of the affected staff walked out on Saturday because they feared the situation would not be resolved quickly enough.

There are thought to be about 60 temporary workers working three different shifts at the Junction Street site. They were brought in to help cope with the Christmas demand. On Friday, workers on one of the day shifts were told the two weeks’ wages they were owed had not gone into their bank accounts.

Bosses promised an alternative form of payment would be made the next day, but it didn’t materialise. So just under half of the 20-strong shift walked out.

They are employed by Angard Staffing Solutions, the Royal Mail in-house recruitment agency. Angard has been failing to pay temporary workers in other parts of the country over the last couple of weeks

Royal Mail will not publicly discuss the problems with Angrad because a review is pending.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
