RESIDENTS of Carrick’s Cairn Road have spoken of their confusion after receiving a letter from Royal Mail last week warning them to prepare for severe weather.
The correspondence, sent from the sorting office on Woodburn Road, cautions residents to prepare for the possibility of severe weather in order to help postal delivery workers.
However, in an area that is frequently cut off by snow in winter, residents were unclear as to what steps they could take.
“I was very annoyed and upset to receive the letter; I’m not sure what they are expecting us to do. Are we supposed to ‘cancel’ all the bad weather on order, or perhaps we’ve to move our properties to warmer climes?” said Cairn Road resident Deirdre Mills.
“It is worth noting that at the first flurry of snow our deliveries have stopped every winter and for the past five winters we have collected our post in person from the sorting office in Carrick without making any comment or complaint.”
Meanwhile, fellow resident Gary Greenfield indicated that a failure to grit the roads in the area was to blame. “Up in this area we’re virtually forgotten about and it’s all down to the fact that the roads aren’t gritted - because of that, in winter we don’t get our post, bins aren’t collected, and any other deliveries don’t make it either,” he said.
“I can understand where Royal Mail are coming from, as obviously they’ve their employees safety to think about. I’m just not sure there’s much residents can do on their own without help from the Roads Service.”
Royal Mail defended the letters as a means of working with customers to try and prevent them from having to pick their post up at the sorting office.
“In the past we’ve had a few near misses when our post men and women have been delivering in the area,” said Royal Mail’s Catherine Mulvenna.
“As an employer we cannot put our employees at risk, so we have taken the precautionary measure of writing to a small number of customers whose addresses proved difficult to access during last winter’s extreme wintry conditions.
“We have asked that these customers contact us to agree whether there are practical steps we can jointly take to ensure that we can continue to get the mail delivered safely should the severe weather conditions return.”

They are a barmy lot, Royal Mail management.
I wouldn't let them run a Whelk stall, never mind a nation's postal service.
Shocking thing is, most Royal Mail executives get over £1million per annum, why????????

I have areas that are impossible to get to in the bad weather, I've told the people that I won't take any risks and they are quite happy about it.
I think the letters are just part of the RM covering their arse just in case there are any complaints.

Yes R M management are as stated a barmy lot.....
Drivers not having driven a van for 3 years were told they could not drive a van untill a test had been taken. but before the test dates arrived, some due to increased workloads were given driving duties..... say no more.
Assessment team after several months sorting out new designed walks, managment then approached the posties asking have they any better ideas.
Waste being one months priority, can be low priority the next.... everyday appears a new priority and a new challenge with often poor sense of direction which leads to worker frustration from above.
Most posties with 15 years service hardly need to be told how to do their job, but some managment seem hell bent on aggrovating their workforce at times.
After so many changes over the past 5 years, one has to ask the question why did things work and get delivered better 6 years ago.
Are not constant changes just an admisssion of not getting it right after every change made, and a faiure to get it right after so many changes. Just trying something new for the sake of it can and often is very costly.
