The timetable for local consultations on the future of the post office network has been published. The programme of consultation starts in September 2007 and will be implemented over a 12-18 month period.
Up to 2500 post office branches are set to close, with around 500 of these being replaced by outreach services such as home delivery and mobile services.
Tricia Dow, Director of Postwatch Scotland said, "Postwatch Scotland urges users of post offices to note when the public consultation for their area is due to take place so that they can take part when the time comes."
The UK has been split into 50 areas. Each area will be included in an Area Plan detailing what changes Post Office Ltd are planning for the area. In each area, a six-week local consultation will take place before a final decision is made by Post Office Ltd.

The local consultation process follows a 12-week national consultation which began in December 2006. The Government published their response to this consultation in May 2007, and you can download the document from the Rural Gateway documents library.
