A POSTMASTER was attacked by a robber who held up his Merseyside post office at gunpoint.

A man brandishing a gun burst into Martins newsagent and post office in Upton Road, Upton, just before 10.40am yesterday.

He threatened staff and customers and assaulted the manager of the shop, leaving him with a head injury.

The offender fled with a large amount of cash and escaped on the back of a motorbike or scrambler bike in the direction of Birkenhead.

At 12.30pm, three youths involved in a motorbike crash in Bidston Road, Bidston, were arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of robbery and the theft of a motorbike.

Last night detectives were working to establish the sequence of events leading to the crash and were still waiting to interview the youths.

They were being treated in hospital for their injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening.

People working in neighbouring shops on the small parade described hearing a “kerfuffle” as the raider ran out.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: “I heard a commotion and then the next thing I knew the ambulance was here and the manager was being taken away. It has shaken everyone up.”

Police said the manager’s injuries were not serious or life-threatening.

In a separate incident last month staff at the shop were threatened by a robber armed with a crow bar.

Detective Inspector Mark Watson, of Merseyside police, said: “Incidents of this nature are rare in this area and those responsible need to be brought to justice.

“This must have been a very frightening ordeal for the staff.”

Bidston Road was sealed off at its junction with Howbeck Road to the junction with Ashburton Road for four hours after the crash.

The robber was wearing black clothing, aged 20-30 and was of a slim build.

The post office part of the shop was sealed off for forensic examination and was due to re-open today.

Call police on 0151-777 2265 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
