Inquest: Royal Mail worker from Peterborough took his own life

A ROYAL Mail worker from Peterborough who hanged himself in his back garden had been worried about being made redundant, an inquest has been told.

Christopher James Hardiment (51), of Scotts Road, Glinton, was found dead on May 20, along with a note expressing his intention to take his own life.

Yesterday, an inquest in Peterborough heard that Mr Hardiment had, on the Tuesday prior to his death, returned to work as a Royal Mail postal sorter.

It had followed a month’s absence due to back pain, which had come shortly after a three-month period off work, ending in February this year, for the same complaint.

His widow, Julie, told the inquest he had expressed some concern prior to his death about being made redundant because of the amount of time he had off work but there was nothing in his behaviour to give cause for concern.

Coroner Gordon Ryall said he believed Mr Hardiment had taken his own life.

He said he believed Mr Hardiment’s concerns about the future was why he took his own life.

He added: “Clearly he was more concerned about the issues than he made known to others.”

Recording a verdict, Mr Ryall said Mr Hardiment had taken his own life.

 So very, very sad. May he rest in peace. Even more sadly, is the fact that many other postal workers will understand this very real fear of losing their jobs--just because they are sick.

It's so very sad that the absence procedures RM have in place just leave the staff with the fear of losing their job, rather than the support they need to return to work

My thoughts are with his family at this time x
