A postwoman was bitten on her hip by a dog that was dangerously out of control, a court heard.

Sharon Hall was delivering post to the home of Susan Skelly on St John’s Road, in Buxton and saw her in the garden with her two dogs.

One of the dogs, a grey Staffordshire Bull Terrior cross, came up to the gate barking at the postwoman.

Helen Griffiths, prosecuting, said: “It made her feel extremely nervous and fearful of the dog.”

High Peak magistrates were told that the dog, called Hattie, crashed into the garden gate before running off. It then appeared round the other side of the boundary of the property and was charging towards her.

The dog then bit her on her hip causing two puncture wounds and leaving a bruise six inches by five in size.

Mrs Skelly, admitted being the owner of a dog that on July 27 was dangerously out of control in a public place and caused injury.

John Bunting, defending, said Mrs Skelly was a responsible dog owner who had gone the extra distance to ensure there could never be a repeat incident.

The court was told the dog was not normally aggressive and that additional measures had been taken including increasing the height of the boundaries of the property and taking the dog to a behavioural therapist.

“It seems to me you can be well satisfied this dog doesn’t pose a danger to public safety,” he added.

Magistrate Neil Broadbent said it was a serious case and a significant injury had been caused.

“We are satisfied it is a one-off event and you have taken all the steps you could to prevent it happening again.

“We don’t believe the dog is a danger to the public, however we are going to make a control order that Hattie is kept under control at all times and on a lead in a public place.”

Mrs Skelly was fined £200, ordered to pay a £15 government surcharge, £85 costs and £300 compensation.

I'd say kill the little s**t, but murdering a human seems to be frowned upon and it wouldn't be fair to kill the dog know would it.

Question:
If the Magistrate truly believed that Hattie the dog is not a danger to the public, why then would he make a control order stating that it is to be kept under control at all times and on a lead in a public place.
