Royal Mail are considering a proposal to install bicycle racks outside their delivery office in Manningtree, despite the town council being told the company had ruled out the plan.

The town council has spent 18 months working on the proposed racks, which will allow three cyclists at a time to safely secure their bikes.

At a Manningtree Council meeting last week, town mayor Michael Dew said an email had been received from property group BNP Paribas saying their client, Royal Mail, were not in favour.

He said: “It was categorical refusal.

“I am most disappointed Royal Mail have turned round and said no.

“They have come after a period of negotiation and just turned it down flat.”

However, Royal Mail say it is still open to the idea, and a spokesman said: "Royal Mail has not refused the Council's request to install bike racks outside Manningtree delivery office - we are still in discussions with the Council about this."

After Manningtree Council were made aware of the company’s apparent change of heart, town clerk Wendy Saint-James said: “Manningtree Town Council are delighted that Royal Mail have decided to continue with negotiations.”
