THE relocation of a village sorting office could result in the misdirection of mail, a councillor has warned.

Royal Mail announced this week that Grimston delivery office would be closing and relocating to Lynn delivery office from early 2012.

It said the consolidation of offices is due to a decline in mail volumes and “tough trading conditions”.

Grimston parish and borough councillor Michael Pitcher said the news was not causing too much concern in the village, but warned it may have its problems.

He said: “When you have a local sorting office, then mail with the wrong address will still make it to the right home as people are familiar with the village. So now we may find mail is misdirected.”

There will be no compulsory redundancies as a result of the move, with the four staff at the Grimston office expected to transfer to Lynn.

Grimston Post Office in Massingham Road will be unaffected, and customers who have large parcels or special delivery, tracked or recorded items to collect can do so from there.
