Change to Harborough 'Post' bus

A new company is taking over an unusual bus service in Harborough.

From Saturday (29th), the 'Post' bus is changing and will be run by George's taxi company with an eight-seater mini-bus.

The unique service, previously run by Leicestershire County Council and Royal Mail, coincided with post collection times and transported both passengers and mail.

The bus links the villages of Peatling Parva, Bruntingthorpe, Upper Bruntingthorpe, Walton, Kimcote and Gilmorton to Lutterworth and was introduced in October 1993.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "This is a valuable service and I'm pleased we've been able to appoint a new operator which will continue to run the same route and timetable."

Lisa Durrant, regional fleet and assets manager for Royal Mail, said: “It is with regret that Royal Mail has to withdraw from providing the postbus service. Royal Mail is first and foremost a postal operator and our main priority is the collection and delivery of mail. We are facing ever-increasing pressure in a competitive market and, in this context, it is more important than ever that Royal Mail focuses on its core business.

“We are fully aware that this route provides an important service to the local residents, and we are pleased to note that the service will continue, using a different operator.”
