Householders in the Bamber Bridge area could see their post delivered later under a shake-up by Royal Mail.

Bosses are revising delivery routes in the PR5 postcode area, which includes Bamber Bridge, Hoghton, Brindle and Charnock.

The changes at the Preston South delivery office in Whitefield Meadow, Bamber Bridge, will see postal workers starting their shifts slightly later and using trolleys to deliver post.

Royal Mail chiefs say the shake-up means some residents may get their mail earlier, while others will get it later, depending on mail volumes.

They have insisted the changes will be phased in to avoid causing chaos around the busy Christmas period.

Mark Bolton, area representative for the Communication Workers’ Union, said there could be some “teething problems” following the changeover but he hoped most residents would not notice a significant difference in deliveries in the long-term.

Changes to how mail is delivered have already been rolled out at other Royal Mail offices in Lancashire, including in Preston and Leyland.

A Royal Mail spokesman said they had already started bringing in the changes in some of the PR5 area over the last week.

She added the situation would be reviewed during a “period of adjustment” and if there were problems in the run-up to Christmas, Royal Mail could adapt how the plan is phased in.

Bosses said the new trolleys will minimise the risk of injury to staff.

Derek Halford, Royal Mail’s collections and delivery sector manager, said: “The local delivery team and I are fully committed to providing a high quality of service that is as reliable and friendly as customers have come to expect from Royal Mail in Preston over many years.”
