Famous people who have delivered the mail

Postman Pat and Cliff Clavin are TV's most celebrated postmen - but a host of celebrities have done their time delivering the mail.

Postman Pat, who is now going to have his own 3D movie, may lay claim to being the world's most famous postman. But here are some other famous posties:

Charles Bukowski, novelist and poet
The acclaimed American writer's first novel, published in 1971, was called Post Office and was about his time as a postman in Los Angeles. Before giving up the job, he said: "I have one of two choices – stay in the post office and go crazy ... or stay out here and play at writer and starve. I have decided to starve."

Raymond van Barneveld, darts player
When he won his first BDO title in 1998 - in a final watched by five million Dutch TV viewers - he was still a working postman but, on his return, 10,000 fans greeted him at Schiphol airport. He said: "As a postman I earned £840 a month and always struggled to look after my wife and three kids. Then suddenly I won a world title and £40,000 and everyone in Holland said 'He deserves it because he's such a nice fellow'. But once I turned pro, and the money rolled in, people said 'Oh, he's so arrogant!'"

Neil Webb, Manchester United and England footballer
In 2004, Neil Webb took a job as a postman in Reading, saying at the time: 'It's good exercise. And I'm home by lunch ... It's a job. What else do people expect me to do?'

John Prine, singer and songwriter
The Grammy winning folk singer John Prine was a postman for five years. He was spotted singing part-time in a bar which led to a professional career.

Cliff Clavin, TV postman
John Ratzenberger's postman was a main character on the NBC series Cheers. He used to toast people by saying: "As they say down at the post office, "here's looking up your address".One of his mail-related statements was: They did a study between postal workers and chimpanzees. They proved chimps were 32 percent slower. Of course, they were better with public relations."

Among other people who have been postmen are Allan B. Calhamer (the inventor of board game Diplomacy), Bon Scott (former lead singer of AC/DC), snooker player Terry Griffiths, footballers David Harvey, Kevin Hector and even Peter Bonetti, who had a spell delivering bills and cards to the residents of the Isle of Mull. And, least we forget, Allan Smethurst, Norfolk's singing mailman

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Webb must be kicking himself, if he was around nowadays he'd be on £50k a week somewhere. My dad still likes to talk about how good he was during his first spell at Forest. He has quite a few medals to his name; 2 league cups, an FA cup, European Cup Winners Cup, Super Cup. Poor bloke having to go from that to ... this.

Alan Arthur Johnson (born 17 May 1950) is a British Labour Party politician who served as Home Secretary from June 2009 to May 2010. Before that, he filled a wide variety of cabinet positions in both the Blair and Brown governments, including Health Secretary and Education Secretary. Until 20 January 2011 he was Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. Johnson has been the Member of Parliament for Hull West and Hessle since 1997.

Born in London on 17 May 1950, the son of Stephen and Lillian Johnson, he was orphaned at the age of 12 when his mother died, Johnson was then in effect brought up by his older sister when the two were assigned a council flat by their child welfare officer. He passed the 11 plus exam and attended Sloane Grammar School in Chelsea, now part of Pimlico Academy, and left school at the age of 15. He then stacked shelves at Tesco before becoming a postman at 18. He was interested in music and joined two pop music bands. Johnson joined the Union of Communication Workers, becoming a branch official. He joined the Labour Party in 1971, although he considered himself a Marxist ideologically aligned with the Communist Party of Great Britain. A full-time union official from 1987, he became General Secretary of the newly formed Communication Workers Union in 1993 following a series of union mergers.

Before entering parliament Johnson was a member of Labour's National Executive Committee. During this time he was the only major union leader to support the abolition of Clause IV.

Both Shaun and Paul Ryder were Postmen.....

Peter Hook, the New Order and Joy Division bassist....
"1983 was the year Happy Mondays first played at the Haçienda, in one of the regular Battle of the Bands competitions. It was their second-ever performance, it was a complete shambles, and they came last in the competition. However, the bassist, Paul Ryder, was my postman and he always slipped demo tapes through my door. It was when I got a tape of "The Egg" that I passed one along to Tony."

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
