A postman has been convicted for burning thousands of items of junk mail because it was too heavy for him to carry on deliveries.
1,500 items of unopened mail were found at Abdul Gafur's home
Abdul Gafur objected to putting the 'bin fodder' through doors on his rounds, so he siphoned it out of his mail, burned some and kept piles more in the garden of his home.
Now Gafur of Ilford in Essex has been given a suspended jail sentence for his actions by a judge who was told that nearly 1,500 items of unopened mail were found at his home.
Nicholas Ham, counsel for 57-year-old Gafur of Wingate Road, Ilford, whose round was in Loughton told Chelmsford Crown Court : "He was effectively incapable of delivering the vast load of junkmail."
However, imposing a six month jail sentence suspended for 18 months and ordering Gafur to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, Judge Anthony Goldstaub QC said that the Royal Mail was "a distinguished British postal institution renowned for renowned for its reliability."
The judge had been told mail from companies such as Direct Line, ProLite Energy and the insurance firm More was among the haul found at the home of Gafur who pleaded guilty to intentionally delaying those packages, destroying a quantity of others by fire and delaying or opening 16 addressed envelopes.
Michael Orsulik, prosecuting for the Royal Mail, said they investigated after receiving a phone call and found "door to door" items in piles in Gafur's front garden.
He said that he had also found some fully addressed post from a Royal Mail pouch which Gafur had inadvertently put on the fire.
Judge Goldstaub told him : "Your job required you to deliver items - instead of delivering them you stored them at your own home and they were never delivered."
He said that what Gafur had done was "a breach of trust."
