WHEN Russell Coe’s postman told him he was going on a charity bike ride, he knew just what to do.

Now Mr Coe is giving Alan Hartshorn and his friend, Scott Eaton, two handmade racing bikes worth £1,500 for their trip, which runs from Land’s End to John O’Groats and aims to raise money for Barnardo’s.

Mr Coe, who runs the company Vandome, told the Yellow Advertiser that it seemed like the right thing to do.

He said: “They were doing a good thing, so it just made sense to make a couple of bikes for them.”

The father-of-one operates his company from Field Way, Dagenham, and has been doing so for the last five years.

The 52-year-old said: “I used to be a mechanic, and I’ve been into cycling all my life, so this was something I had always wanted to do.”

Mr Hartshorn, from Straight Road, Romford, was delighted with Mr Coe’s generosity.

He said: “It was fantastic news for us. He is making the bikes especially for the trip, which is brilliant.

“In hard times like these, it’s not often someone does something for nothing.”

The journey will start on September 1 next year.
