In what is said to be a 'landmark' in its company wide engineering professional registration programme, 50 Royal Mail frontline engineers have attained registration as Engineering Technicians (EngTech) , while five managers have been registered as Incorporated Engineers (IEng).
"We have always had good training programmes, but they are not recognised externally," said James Baker, Royal Mail's head of central engineering maintenance. "It was important to partner with a well regarded organisation to help our professional workforce to develop and gain recognition from the engineering community."
Royal Mail, which has 860 frontline engineering staff and a smaller management project team, has been working with the Institution of Engineering and Technology to develop its engineering workforce to professionally registered status. The scheme's aim is for all frontline engineers to at least have an EngTech qualification and for managers to at least have IEng status. The programme has been well received by those involved, with many of those who have achieved EngTech status keen to progress to the next level.
