Duo robbed postman and taxi driver

TWO drunken robbers who attacked a postman and a taxi driver so they could get money to buy more booze have been jailed.


Kenny Workman, 27, was sentenced to four years behind bars and Vincent Jenkins, 28, was jailed for three years and six months.

The pair had been out for the night when they came across postman Peter Morrissey in Fletcher Way, Hemel Hempstead, as he made his way to work at around 6am.

He was attacked and robbed of his wallet and its contents, St Albans Crown Court heard on Friday.

Shortly afterwards they were in Wheatfield in the town when they came across taxi driver Anthony Clarke. He was punched by Workman and his Blackberry mobile phone, cash box and its contents were taken.

After robbing the men they waited in Hemel Hempstead for shops to open so they could buy more alcohol. They also tried to sell the Blackberry to get more money.

Workman, of Thriftfield, Hemel Hempstead and Jenkins, of Knightsbridge Way, Hemel Hempstead were convicted of two counts of robbery, committed on March 16 last year.

For Workman, Adrian Eissa said at the time his client had lost his job and was depressed.

Amanda Hamilton, for Jenkins, said: “He was ‘out of it’ due to alcohol.” Since then she said the father-of-two had managed to get his drinking under control. She said he had been working at a distribution warehouse.

While in court both of the men apologised for what they had done.

Jailing them, Judge Griffith said: “The victims were vulnerable. It was very early in the morning. I have a duty to protect Mr Morrissey and Mr Clarke from people like you who think a good way to get more booze is to rob somebody.”

Speaking after the case, taxi driver of 40 years Mr Clarke said: “I’m glad that is has come to a conclusion. I feel it is very sad that they felt they needed to go out at six in the morning to get money for drink.

“I call them the lost souls. It was obvious they had been drinking.”
