On Monday 4 July, we as local councillors felt vindicated in bringing Royal Mail to Council to answer questions over their poor service to Woking residents recently. Their modernisation of postal deliveries simply have not worked resulting in most residents receiving mail every other day or very late.
At the Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting on Monday night, it was glaringly obvious that Royal Mail managers were unaware of most of the problems occurring on the ground and the low morale amongst their own postal workers. Many postal workers reported to us anonymously that they were hiding bicycles in Royal Mail vans and using their own cars in a desperate attempt to get all the mail delivered, according to unworkable delivery routes mapped out by a computer system that only superheroes would be able to deliver! I won’t go into all the details here. You can read full details of feedback from the Royal Mail meeting on my wife, Cllr Amanda Coulson’s blog, here. I quote part of it here:
“At the end of the meeting, we urged Royal Mail to meet us again in 6 months to update us on progress they have made to sort out their problems. We have asked their managers to do walkabouts with their postal staff to see what is actually happening on the ground and that the current computer model is simply not working for staff. We, as councillors, have also been invited to join them and I will be taking them up on their offer.”
This story has also been covered in the Surrey Advertiser, which you can find at this link here, and it features on the front page of this month’s Woking News and Mail.
We have already heard from postal staff that more managers than usual have been coming into the sorting offices this week. Hopefully this is a good sign! Despite everyone saying that nothing can be done to bring private companies to account, I think that we are proving that they can - if you are determined enough to take them on. Right now we are still busy negotiating with South West Trains over a venue and date for a meeting to investigate the appalling crisis management of the train delays on the 9th June. See my earlier post on the South West Train delays.
