FAMILIES and businesses across Ormskirk are set to receive their mail later in the day amid changes to the Royal Mail described as a “shambles”.
Postal workers will start later and many routes will be made bigger.
Bikes will be scrapped for vans and trollies to deal with heavier loads.
In Skelmersdale where the changes were made two months ago households complain they do not receive post until 3pm.
There have not been any job losses but postmen’s routes have changed which appears to have caused confusion.
One GCSE exam marker thought his summer exam scripts were lost when they did not show up for two weeks.
And one Ormskirk postman said: “Everyone is scratching their head thinking, ‘how can this be?’ We know it is going to be a shambles. There are a lot of unhappy people in Ormskirk.”
The Advertiser understands priority on the routes is being given to long-serving staff followed by part-timers.
Part-timers are cheaper than middle-serving postmen and women who have worked for the service for 10 years.
“People who have been there nine years will have their job taken,” said the source.
“Morale is awful. We are being asked to come in later. They (Royal Mail) don’t give a damn.”
And another Royal Mail source described workers as “furious” with the overhaul of the service.
The changes are also set to impact on businesses who rely on post coming early.
But a spokeswoman for Royal Mail said there had been a dramatic change in the way people communicated and fewer letters were being posted. As a result post workers’ delivery rounds had changed. Some rounds are being made longer and others shorter to give postal workers similar sized rounds, according to the spokeswoman.
Post workers are also being given trollies to deal with an increase in larger packages.
“All mail is being delivered every day,” said the spokeswoman. “But there is no set time where we have to guarantee delivery. These changes are introduced on a phased basis across the country. They have been introduced in Skelmersdale over the last few weeks and it has meant a period of adjustment for staff.
“We are doing everything possible to maintain a high level of service.”
