POSTAL deliveries in Barrow could be disrupted

POSTAL deliveries in Barrow could be disrupted in the coming weeks.

Residents and businesses are being warned that usual delivery times could alter and their regular postmen and women may differ.

The changes are part of Royal Mail’s national £2bn modernisation process, which will include a redrafting of routes in the town.

Mark Dudgeon, collections and delivery sector manager for Royal Mail, said the organisation would be doing everything it could to maintain a high level of service – but added that there would be a period of adjustment for staff.

Mr Dudgeon said: “We are proud of the high regard in which our postmen and women are held in Barrow.

“The changes to delivery routes will mean that a member of our local and experienced team will still be delivering to our customers in the area.

“The local delivery team and I are fully committed to providing a high quality of service that is as reliable and friendly as customers have come to expect from Royal Mail in Barrow over many years.”

Most people should expect to continue to receive their mail before lunchtime each day.

But usual delivery times could change as established routes are redrawn.

Postmen and women are also likely to share a van and to use trolleys rather than shoulder bags to carry mail.

A number of new machines could also be installed at the Abbey Road sorting office to automatically sort letters and parcels, which has previously been done by hand.

Royal Mail claims the moves are all part of plans to make the service more efficient – reducing costs and offering better value for money.

A spokesman for Royal Mail’s North West team said: “It’s about reflecting the changes that we are seeing in the postal service today.

“There are far fewer letters in the postman’s bag now and substantially more parcels.

“Many of these changes will help in the way the post is delivered door to door, by literally taking the weight off our delivery staffs’ shoulders.”

Wow, replacing the whole office with one member of 'the team'. Wonder how long his/her duty time will be? :left:

If the duties finish at 3pm, and nobody is on delivery for as much as six hours, then the majority will actually receive their mail after lunchtime each day.

Of course using Royal Mail spin perhaps lunchtime in Barrow is most frequently taken at around 2pm!

If lunch time in Mr Dudgeon's mind is 1.00 pm he might just be right . For most people in Barrow it's when the chippy opens at 11.30 am .
