Postal workers stole 51 mobile phones from Royal Mail sorting office in Birmingham

TWO young postal workers could be jailed after they pleaded guilty to pocketing 51 mobile phones and two computer games as they worked at Birmingham’s central mail centre.

Shabir Ali, 20, of Heanor Croft, Aston, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court and admitted stealing 41 mobile phones which were found on his bed, three more he was carrying, plus an Xbox game he stuffed down his trousers.

His friend Rezan Ahmed, 19, of Gladstone Street, Aston, was charged with stealing seven mobile phones and a Wii game he had also hidden in his trousers.

The pair helped themselves to the contents of packages as they worked a ten-day contract at the Royal Mail base, in Aston, last Christmas.

All the mobile phones had been addressed to a Tamworth phone recycling company called RPC Recycle, which was instead sent nine empty packages.

John Dove, prosecuting, said the men were eventually caught on CCTV after an investigation was launched when a manager at the firm complained.

He said: “The company in Tamworth to which these recycled phones were being sent received a number of open postal packets.

“That led to an investigation and observations being carried out on a number of casual employees. In the course of those observations Mr Ali was seen to secrete items from an open postal packet on his person.”

Magistrates told Ali: “This is clearly a breach of trust. We’re looking at 44 mobile phones, not looking at one or two. This is clearly premeditated.”

Ahmed, who appeared in a separate hearing, was also told he had abused the trust which had been put in him.

Abid Hussain, defending Ali, asked magistrates to bear in mind his client’s young age and early guilty plea.

John Morgan, defending Ahmed, said the theft conviction would damage his client’s career as he was going to university to study business management.

Both men were bailed and the case was adjourned until June 10, when they will be sentenced.

Does nobody think this is a problem with employing casuals over Christmas, maybe if the rest of us weren't too knackered then we'd be able to do the extra little bit of work (falling mail volumes and all  ).
