Support in bid to save Holbeach delivery office

COUNCILLORS have pledged their support in the fight to save Holbeach Delivery Office from closure.


The Barrington Gate office, which is believed to employ about 30 people, could shut next summer and have its business transferred to Spalding under Royal Mail modernistation plans.

At last week’s South Holland District Council meeting, Holbeach councillor Francis Biggadike called on fellow members to support his proposal for a letter to be sent from the authority to call on Royal Mail to ditch the plans.

He said the closure would have a big impact on the east of the district, and be bad for the environment at a time when the council is keen to embrace the green agenda.

Coun Biggadike said: “At this time ten mail vans leave Holbeach every day to collect and deliver the mail.

“If Holbeach was to close these vans would incur extra mileage.”

Council leader Gary Porter said that both the council chairman and portfolio holder for economic development would write to express the authority’s “extreme concern” at the loss of services in the council.

The authority recently pledged to fight any plans that involved removing services in the district after agreeing to support the campaign to try to keep the St Guthlac School open in Crowland.

Coun Porter said: “We said that this council would resist any reduction in services in the district – this is probably the first test of that so I would strongly urge all members of the council to agree to support that position.”

Staff were told about the plans last month but Royal Mail insists the proposal is in its early stages.
