DMA calls on Royal Mail and CWU to avoid strike action for UK business

The Direct Marketer's Association has called on Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union to end their dispute in an effort to avoid strike action on behalf of the companies that rely on their services.

With an impending walk out looming large after members of the CWU yesterday backed industrial action in protest against planned mail centre closures, the DMA’s head of postal affairs said that the two parties should avoid any such action, especially at a time when businesses are already weak.

Said Alex Walsh, head of postal affairs at the DMA: “For the sake of every company that relies on the post to issue invoices, collect payments and market their products and services to customers, we would urge Royal Mail and the CWU to ensure that they explore every possible avenue to resolve this dispute and reiterate that a strike is certainly not the right mechanism to resolve any concerns. No party stands to gain from any strike action and UK business will be the ultimate loser – particularly as the economic recovery is still weak.”

Walsh added: “Like the management of Royal Mail, the CWU ultimately wants the same thing; namely, a successful, vibrant Royal Mail. The CWU needs to realise that these strikes will only serve to undermine the commercial value of post as a means of doing business.”

It is thought that around 3,500 Royal Mail staff may take strike action unless assurances are made in safeguarding jobs.
