Stage 1 warnings

Hi all

I would appreciate any feedback on the above subject, had to take 3 weeks off recently to undergo
corrective surgery.

My line manager has said this will mean a stage 1 warning being issued, seems a little harsh to me,
anybody had a similar situation?

That's just the way things go now, anything from 10 days and you get the warning

3 weeks S/L will trigger a stage 1interview it is up to the line manager if the stage 1 is issued. The line manager should take each case on its individual merits before deciding. But as most line managers are fairly spineless and will not wish to upset the DIM most stage 1s will be rubber stamped.

just a point worth mentioning.....

your manager can not issue the stage one until you return to work.

just make sure you are fully fit before returning or they will be pushing for a stage two should you have to go off again.

I recently went in with someone regarding a stage 1. When they asked if either of us wanted to add anything, I pointed out that a warning was just that.
The postie hadnt been off for x amount of years and he was only off because of an accident at home. There was nothing to suggest that a warning was needed
in this case as it was a one off and there was nothing in his records to suggest otherwise. The stage 1 was NOT issued.
However, I triggered a stage 1 and it was reached by 4 different absences. I was issued it.

Put in a grievance,see your rep and also kick up a stink as far as you can.
You aint had the interview yet have you.
This should be thrown out.

If your manager has said to you that "this will mean a stage 1 warning being issued" before having interviewed you, then take that statement to your rep.
Your line manager appears to have pre-judged you before the interview.

Happened to me,was in the yard having a fag with my rep and the lino came out said he'd recieved the paperwork and he'll see me later.
I'm gonna give you the warning he said,me and rep went straight to the DOM.

The Attendance Procedure is meant to be remedial, not punitive. Your line manager should know what the purpose of this procedure is and be able to to justify giving you a stage 1 warning if that is what he/she decides to do.

A stage 1 warning is not automatic, it is up to your line manager to decide whether you should be issued this warning. If you can demonstrate that you know what the standards of attendance are and that you have a record of following these standards, it will be very difficult for your line manager to be able to justify issuing a stage 1 warning for a one off illness.

In fact, you could argue that, by making you endure the stage 1 interview, your manager is placing you under unneccessary stress, particularly if you have come back on light duties on the Rehabilitation process.

Your rep should write a stern letter to your DOM requesting that his/her managers stop the practise of placing unneccessary stress on members that are recovering from illness.

Just playing devils advocate....

If you don't go sick on a regular basis and this was a one off then what's the problem about getting a stage as you wouldn't expect to trigger a stage 2?? Would you?

In the interview state that the hospitalisation was to undergo corrective surgery which would stop any further absences relating to the problem. If the manager has any common sense then he/she would discount the sick period. If you unfortunately trigger a stage 3 in the near future your area rep should be able to get you off due to the corrective nature of the surgery. Royal Mail's own documentation states that managers should take account of surgery which results in better attendance.
