A PROUD Filton resident is celebrating after his campaign to get the town's name recognised in his address was successful.
As previously reported in the Evening Post, letters were sent out to all Filton householders asking whether they would object to the town's name being added to addresses listed on the Royal Mail's database.
If less than 20 per cent of residents objected then the change would be made.
Currently addresses in the BS34 postcode on the database are listed as being in Bristol.
Bill Moore, 45, who lives in Mackie Road, started a campaign nine months ago to get the listing changed to include Filton.
He said the change was important as some Filton mail gets sent to the wrong place.
He said this was especially annoying for residents when they had ordered an item on the internet. When asked by a website to simply enter a postcode and house number, the default address – which usually comes from the Royal Mail database – did not include the town's name.
This resulted in some items ending up being delivered to addresses as far away as Portishead.
But now Mr Moore, who recently became a town councillor, is celebrating success after he received correspondence from Michael Hart, major address change officer at the Royal Mail, telling him his proposal had been successful.
Out of the 1,923 residents whom letters were sent to, only 16 objected – 0.83 per cent – to the change.
Mr Hart states that he is in the process of amending the affected addresses on the Postcode Address File to include Filton and will shortly be writing to residents to confirm the Royal Mail database has been updated.
Mr Moore told the Post: "I am delighted for the people of Filton, that after a long process our historical town is now being recognised by the Post Office."
The campaigner is also trying to help residents in Filton with a BS7 postcode to petition Royal Mail to get it changed to BS34.
Residents say the BS7 postcode means they pay more when it comes to car and home insurance and that it separates them from the rest of the town.
In 2009 the BS7 area came under scrutiny when it was named in a list of the top 20 postcodes where people make home insurance claims for burglary.
