Dudley postman dumped over 6,000 letters

A 31 YEAR-old Dudley postman who dumped over 6,000 letters and catalogues near Dudley Zoo while stashing more than 4,000 mail items at his home has been spared time behind bars.

After his arrest David Spiers told investigating officers he felt he had too much mail to deliver which was why he took it home at the end of his shift.

John Dove prosecuting told Walsall Magistrates court, that Mr Spiers did not feel he could tell his boss about the way he felt, because he thought he would get into trouble.

Mr Dove said Spiers, who was employed by Royal Mail for over two years, was rumbled when a member of the public reported seeing mail being dumped off Tipton Road - some of it dating back to February 2010.

It was then discovered that the items should have been put through letter boxes by Spiers and, when approached by investigators, he said he had more undelivered mail at his home in Park Moor Gardens.

Spiers admitted two charges of intentionally delaying the delivery of postal packets and was given a six month jail term suspended for two years for dumoping 6,385 letters and catalogues near the Zoo while a further 4,654 items were recovered from his home.

He was further ordered to carry out 200 hours community punishment and to pay £2,360 costs.

Mr Dove told the court that Spiers who worked at the Walsall delivery office was immediately suspended from his duties after being questioned by investigators.

Julian Derry defending maintained there had only been 101 pieces of addressed mail amongst the items that should have been delivered by Spiers and the rest were junk mail.

"He realises it was a stupid thing to do and that he should have told his supervisor," said Mr Derry. "He panicked and he is extremely sorry for what he did."
