ROYAL Mail is to close its sorting office in Hazlemere in the Autumn.

The operations of Hazlemere Delivery Office on Oakengrove Road will be merged into those at the High Wycombe North office, which is in the town centre.

The move will mean customers in the HP15 postcode will now have to travel to Queen Victoria Road to collect parcels which could not be delivered by a postman first time.

Bosses say the switch will provide “improved working conditions, secure employment and a more cost effective operation”.

A statement said: “Faced with declining mail volumes and increasingly tough trading conditions, Royal Mail constantly reviews the operational efficiency and commercial practicality of all its units...

“At the same time we need to respond to the huge growth in electronic communications and the resulting decline in overall mail volumes, which in the UK means that there are now 16 million fewer letters posted every day compared to five years ago.”

It said there will be no compulsory redundancies and Royal Mail will reimburse staff for any extra mileage incurred.

For customers who prefer not to visit the enquiry office in person, Royal Mail offers a free redelivery service which can be accessed online or by calling the number on the card they leave.
