Posties banned from delivering mail by bicycle

Posties have been ordered off their bikes in a bid to cut down accidents and speed up the delivery of mail.

Instead, teams of two will use vans carrying trolleys on rounds in Sidmouth, Devon.

But the move by Royal Mail has been branded daft and environmentally damaging.

One resident said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous – health and safety gone mad.”

The company claims banning bikes will improve efficiency, reduce accidents and prevent injuries.

A Royal Mail spokesman added: “The make-up of the mail bag is changing. An entire round can be carried out now without need to return to the sorting office.”

But East Devon county councillor Stuart Hughes slammed the decision, saying: “It’s a crying shame we won’t see posties on their bikes.

“I appreciate Royal Mail is investing in collection and delivery, but as carbon reduction is part of that, bicycles seem to fit in perfectly.”

Some days I can barely fit one duty into a Combo and the van shares sometimes need to return to the office to collect the rest of their mail...........plus - surely that was what drop boxes where for, so that you didn't have to return to the office on your bike.

They really are seperated from the reality of delivery these days, maybe Moya Guillotine and Toolhorse should get their arses out on one of the revised van share duties to see how they can be done more efficiently.

Perhaps the spokesperson is aware that the current pouches are to phased out and these new ones brought in, albeit in RM colours.

You miss the point. By misinforming the public they feed them information which skews their view of things. You see it time and agin in nearly every headline grabbing story, regardless of what it is about.
