THIEVES smashed open post boxes in a series of raids that have left locals fearing mail has fallen into the wrong hands.

Police are probing a number of attacks on Anglesey.

The Royal Mail said such raids were usually very rare in Wales. The most recent saw a post box ripped open near Menai Bridge, and two more incidents are being investigated in the Llanfechell and Cemaes areas.

One community leader said he was shocked at the attacks and that boxes should be “sacrosanct”

Police said this followed recent incidents in the north of the island and urged people to come forward with information to help catch the culprits.

Customers who fear their letters may have been stolen have been asked to contact the Royal Mail.

Keith Evans, councillor for Menai Bridge, said: “Crimes against post boxes like this are unheard of, they should be sacrosanct.

“We all use them and when we do it does not cross our minds that someone would steal our post in this way.

“They are causing disruption to a service that we all rely on and I don’t see what they are getting from it.

“They are just causing upset.

“This particular box is isolated so that may be why it was targeted.

“If this is a problem then I hope the police find the person responsible.”

The recent raid was on a box on the B5420, between Menai Bridge and Llangefni. Other incidents are understood to have happened in the Llanfechell and Cemaes areas.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said they took attacks on post boxes very seriously and urged people with information to come forward to police.

She added: “The post box on the B5420 has been withdrawn from service until a repair can be affected. We apologise to customers for the inconvenience.

“We would ask anyone with concerns about postings to contact Royal Mail Customers Service on 0845 7740740.”
