THE proposed closure of a Royal Mail delivery office is being challenged by the constituency MP.
Labour MP for the Rhondda Chris Bryant has written to Royal Mail’s head postmaster to make the case for Treorchy Delivery Office to remain open.
Mr Bryant is concerned the closure of the office would make it much harder for Rhondda Fawr residents to pick up deliveries and access other Post Office services.
The Royal Mail is currently undertaking a feasibility study into closing Treorchy Delivery Office and moving its functions to Ferndale Post Office.
The Treorchy Delivery Office currently provides services to Cwmparc, Ynyswen, Treherbert, Tynewydd, Blaencwm & Blaenrhondda, Pentre, Ton Pentre, Gelli and Ystrad.
Mr Bryant has written to the Royal Mail to demand the unique geography of the Rhondda is taken into consideration and that the Treorchy Delivery Office remains open.
“I am very concerned about the pressures that our network of post offices in the Rhondda is facing at the moment,” he said.
“In the Rhondda, where a decision to relocate from Treorchy to the Ferndale office will mean residents are suddenly two bus journeys or a mountain away from their local delivery office, the impact will be less access for people to postal services.”

Re: MP’s bid to keep Valleys Royal Mail office open
Royal Mail bosses just look at maps. They have no idea of the terrain of the area. They see the close proximity of the two offices and fail to see the bloody big mountain in between them, the road connecting them being amongst the very first to be closed in the ice and snow! The staff and the customers won't count in the end, the accountants will have the final say (as they ALWAYS do).
