Villagers concerns taken to Royal Mail’s Chief Executive

Residents in the Cefnbrynbrain and Ystradowen areas of the Amman Valley have been campaigning to have their postcodes changed from SA9 to SA18 on the basis it would significantly reduce bills such as car insurance.

The villages are in the Carmarthenshire local authority but lay on the border with the Neath Port Talbot authority. Car insurance companies would, residents believe, automatically reduce their insurance costs were the postcode to change.

Plaid Cymru AM for Carmarthen East & Dinefwr constituency Rhodri Glyn Thomas who represents the two villages has taken the resident’s request directly to the Chief Executive of Royal Mail.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:

“I fully support the residents in their endeavours to have an SA18 postcode. Given that the villages are within the Carmarthenshire authority, it makes sense to me to change from the SA9 which bumps up the cost of car insurance.

“My office has supported the villagers of Ystradowen previously when the Royal Mail / Land Registry wanted to remove the name of the village from the address – this would have been a complete blow to the history and identity of the village.

“My office has spoken directly with the office of Royal Mail’s Chief Executive and we have presented the villagers petition to Royal Mail. I have assured that the request is now with Royal Mail’s High Priority Team.

“Given that there will be a boundary review soon after the 2012 local council elections I fear Royal Mail will want to stall any action until after this date.

“In this tough economic climate, I will be sure to put pressure on Royal Mail to implement this change as soon as possible”
