Cheryl Cole expected to be 'very upset' over jailing of brother Andrew Tweedy

Cheryl Cole's brother was locked up for six years yesterday for his part in a terrifying post office armed robbery.

Andrew Tweedy, 30, supplied an imitation gun to a gang of four, who also wielded a machete during the raid.

A source close to the X Factor judge said last night: "This will hit Cheryl for six. She'll be very upset. It will be hard for her to get her head around this."

The singer, 27, who has two other brothers and an older sister, has tried to get Andrew into rehab to fight his drug addiction on several occasions.

But the pair have not been in touch recently. The source added: "The pair weren't speaking but he's still her flesh and blood. It's really sad."

Tweedy's criminal record stretches back as far as 1993 when, as a 13-yearold, he was convicted of robbery. He was also handed a six-year term in a Young Offender Institute for a stabbing at the age of 17.


The court heard that the gang met at his house before and after the robbery last year. Tweedy pleaded guilty to conspiracy to rob and possession of a firearm with intent.

Prosecuting, Gavin Doig told Newcastle crown court: "He provided the gun to the robbers and his home was both the meeting point before the robbery and the hide-out after it."

The gang - Christopher Swindle and Christopher Finlinson, both 23, Craig Glendinning, 24, and Jamie Percival, 22, - raided the post office in Longbenton, near Newcastle, last May 10.

There were customers in the post office at the time, including young children, the court was told.

The gang netted £2,000 from the raid. When police raided Tweedy's home nearby, they found balaclavas, a machete and the imitation Beretta gun stashed away in his loft. He was holed up in a hotel at the time with girlfriend Emma Stanners, 30, and their son Che, two.

Arrested several days later, Tweedy admitted giving the gun to the other gang members, and also named them.

The others were last week jailed for a total of more than 26 years. They were sentenced separately due to animosity between them and Tweedy. Stanners was cleared of money laundering.

Bit rich of Cheryl considering she is a convicted criminal in her own right, assault occasioning actual body harm, her family background is not exactly polished, if she hadn't found fame she would just as easily be pregnant single stuck in a chavy council flat in a dingy area not much different from where her family is.
