Microsoft SharePoint 2010 has been installed by the Royal Mail to help it reduce outgoings and improve its IT infrastructure.

The move is part of a "rapid modernisation" of postal services to help fend off increased competition and the threat of privatisation.

Furthermore, the company now has a scalable solution to help it pay for what it uses, while having Microsoft SharePoint 2010 hosted off-site.

Adrian Steel, head of infrastructure at the firm, told the Daily Telegraph that the introduction of cloud services is very significant.

"In terms of its importance, cloud computing is right up there with the internet itself," he told the news provider.

"It has given us a foundation to adapt and change so, whatever the future holds, we are ready. Decisions are infinitely quicker now."

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 gives businesses the most up-to-date communication tools for employees, providing them with the platform to share documents, blogs and wikis.
