Regeneration scheme could bring new jobs and services to Liskeard

New jobs and services could come to Liskeard as part of ambitious regeneration plans unveiled this week.

Plans have been revealed for a new covered pannier market, just a month after a study was released on future prospects for the neighbouring cattle market.

The town council is also exploring other projects, including housing developments and the possibility of new retail provision.

A new Team Liskeard approach is now being set up with Cornwall Council.

Councillor Tony Powell, mayor of Liskeard, said: "We are in the process of agreeing this approach with Cornwall Council to examine and take forward all the projects now under way in the town. These are exciting times and we have a unique opportunity, at a time of great financial restraint, to buck the trend and deliver both new services and jobs."

The pannier market featuring a host of traders was put before councillors at their monthly meeting last week by Lucy Jenkin from Mitchell Architects.

It is envisaged the facility will be positioned on the site of Royal Mail's sorting office on Barras Street, which would be relocated to a site at Tencreek. It may also include some start-up units for businesses, a turning area and a seating area linked to Stuart House.

Mr Powell added: "The provision of a pannier market is high on the list of priorities determined through the community strategy programme and subsequent consultations. It was seen as initially a key ingredient for the cattle market redevelopment but as the cattle market study progressed and we became aware of the difficulties being experienced by the sorting office in its present location, we investigated its relocation to an edge of town site, at Tencreek, similar to the location at Looe. The concept is to maintain a market town image and to draw people into the town centre. We have looked at the provision in Tavistock and the impact and operation of the market there, and, as in Tavistock, the developer is looking to the town council to manage the facility on a form of shared income basis."

"The idea and initial designs are out there for discussion and input from the general public and this will be available through our website."

The idea already has support from the town's traders' association. Spokesperson Ron Davis added: "The traders think this is a positive move for the town, anything that will help bring people into the centre should be welcomed. We are very supportive."

Comments from the town council will be passed on to developer Brook Street Properties. Initial designs are on the town council's website http://www.liskeard.gov.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for the public and will be further discussed at a public consultation.
