Österreichische Post AG (Post AG) chief Georg Pölzl has defended the firm’s decision to charge more for sending letters.

The state-owned postal services provider announced yesterday (Tues) that the fee for posting a letter weighing 20 grams or less will increase from 55 to 62 Eurocents on 1 May.

Pölzl pointed out today that rates had been the same for seven years although Post AG’s personnel costs soared by 25 per cent at the same time. He added the upcoming fee rise will mean just two Euros of additional costs per year for an average Austrian household.

The former T-Mobile Germany manager also said Post AG is considering a reform of the organisation of its service in post offices to slash customers’ waiting time in queues.

The Republic of Austria holds a 52.8 per cent stake in Post AG through Industry-Holding Stock Corporation ÖIAG. Post AG is quoted on the Vienna Stock Exchange’s (WBAG) Prime Market. One share cost 22.65 Euros at 9am this morning.
