New campaign for better service from Royal Mail

Borough Councillor Keith Watts has started a new campaign for improvements in Royal Mail delivery services in Whitchurch. When the Local Delivery Office in Whitchurch was closed on 2nd May 2009, promises were made about the delivery service itself and about the handling of undelivered mail.

Keith Watts said “When I met Royal Mail’s Regional Delivery Manager, Kevin Bunch, in Whitchurch Town Hall, with Town Mayor Peter Williams and Overton Councillor Paula Baker, he made some promises. In particular he offered a free pick-up from Overton or Whitchurch Post Office so that people would not have to go to Basingstoke nor pay a fee for collecting mail that could not be delivered. Royal Mail have totally failed to arrange this in nearly two years.

“More recently I am getting many reports of deliveries missed, several day’s mail being delivered at one time and that bags of undelivered mail are taken back to Basingstoke when the postmen’s hours are up. I have reported these complaints through Royal Mail’s customer sevice website and received derisory replies. Now I have written again to the Chief Executive of Royal Mail saying that the ‘organisation’ put in place after closure of our LDO does not work.

“I will be collecting names of people who want to join this campaign. If you want to join in email me at campaign@keithwatts.org.uk in the first instance.”

Dear Ms Greene

Letter deliveries since closure of Whitchurch LDO in May 2009

I am writing to you as I assume that Mark Higson and Kevin Bunch have left Royal Mail because I am getting no reply to emails sent to them. I can also get no intelligent response from Royal Mail Customer Services.

With other Councillors and residents of Whitchurch (RG28) and Overton (RG25) I will be starting a publicity campaign for fulfilment of promises made before Whitchurch LDO was closed on 2nd May 2009. This will include a relaunch of the website http://www.thirdclassmail.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

I will send a copy of this letter to you by email with a number of attachments as evidence that a Regional Director of Royal Mail promised that undelivered mail could be available for pick-up free of charge from the Post Office counters in Overton and Whitchurch and that Royal Mail has repeatedly failed to ensure that this happens. Whilst I don’t doubt the sincerity of this original offer it is clear that Royal Mail management have failed to arrange it despite several assurances that the arrangement is confirmed with the Post Office.

Meanwhile, the disgraceful performance of Royal Mail deliveries has been reported to me many times. I have reported these issues through your Customer Services website and, after long delays, received derisory replies.

Deliveries are not made to every part of Whitchurch every day. Some deliveries are very bulky because they include several days mail. We know that your staff return to Basingstoke every day with bags of undelivered mail. The ‘organisation’ put in place after the closure of our LDO is dysfunctional.

I will publish this letter and your reply.

Yours sincerely

Keith Watts
