A 35-year-old Lowestoft man appeared in court this morning charged with setting fire to two post boxes at the town’s main post office.
Stephen Davis, 35, of Pier Terrace, is alleged to have started the blaze at the boxes at the London Road North post office at about 7.10am on Wednesday.
The postbox fire spread to the main building.
Davis was charged at Lowestoft Magistrates’ Court with causing criminal damage by fire to two Royal Mail post boxes.
He was also charged with damaging by fire the post office building.
Davis did not enter any pleas and the case was adjourned until March 10 so psychiatric reports can be prepared.
He was released on conditional bail which bans him from entering all post offices in Lowestoft. Davis is also forbidden from leaving his home between 9pm and 9am.
Several pieces of mail in the boxes were damaged or destroyed.
Anyone who thinks their mail was destroyed or damaged should contact the royal mail customer services team on 08457 740 740.

The bit about contacting customer services is a joke because it's a 0845 number it could cost you a lot of money hanging on for someone to answer
and sometimes you never get through
