Kenilworth Royal Mail post but will there be action?

KENILWORTH’S MP has met with Royal Mail managers to find out what they are doing to get the town’s postal service back on track.

At the meeting last Friday, Jeremy Wright told managers Doug Neal and David Wright that Kenilworth was feeling “pretty bruised” by its experience over the past few months and was in need of “special care” and a public meeting with the postal company.

He said: “Some of my constituents have told me they didn’t receive any post between Saturday December 18 and Wednesday December 29. Even allowing for the snow, this is an excessive period to be without a postal service.”

Local manager David Wright said the postmen and women had been desperate to go out and do their rounds in the bad weather but they had to be stopped because of the risk of accidents.

Mr Wright was told that Kenilworth’s post had already been badly affected because of new working practices introduced in the town in October. This coupled with the severe weather and Christmas post had all had an impact on the service.

Extra staff have now being recruited and discussions are taking place to possibly change rounds.

Mr Wright said: “Although the Royal Mail said it is working to correct the situation, I questioned the wisdom of introducing new working systems so close to Christmas and asked for reassurance that lessons had been learned.

“I also asked them to think about holding a public meeting so people in Kenilworth can pose questions to them directly to see what has gone wrong and what changes are going to be implemented to improve the service.

“I have not heard back about this yet but am keeping in close contact with the Royal Mail to see what progress is being made.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said the meeting with Mr Wright was very constructive.

She added: “Changes to local delivery practices in Kenilworth are part of Royal Mail’s commitment to modernise the business.

“We apologise to customers who have been affected in the area by these changes.

“Our local management are working hard to address the issues and a series of measures are being taken to rectify the situation as soon as possible.”
