Church delivers help to Royal Mail : in parish of Frankwell

A Shropshire church has delivered winter weather assistance to the Royal Mail – in the appropriately named parish of Frankwell. In addition to the usual Sunday Services, Carol Services and Crib Services, the church is now offering a postal service!



Due to the extreme weather gripping the country, residents of Frankwell in Shrewsbury have been without their usual deliveries of letters, cards and parcels. The smaller streets and pavements haven’t been gritted and getting about has been extremely difficult.

Local postman Gareth Edwards came up with the idea of using St George’s Church as a postal pick-up point for residents and the church readily agreed. The postal service began on Tuesday and will continue tomorrow (Thursday).

Vicar of St Georges, Frankwell, the Revd Murray McBride, said: “There has been a great community spirit among local residents and people have been stopping and coming into the church itself as we've been preparing for carol services. Many people have enjoyed our life-size nativity figures, which this year include a 7-ft Angel Gabriel. This has been a great source of interest for all ages and caught their imagination about the Christmas story.”

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: “Our postmen and women are pulling out all the stops to get the mail delivered as quickly as possible, although in some instances these efforts are being hampered by the snow and icy conditions. Whilst main roads may be passable the conditions on side roads, pavements and driveways are still treacherous.

“Our people have been absolutely fantastic and completely dedicated in getting mail delivered which is demonstrated by Gareth’s initiative and the fantastic support of everyone at St George’s. We will continue doing our very best to keep the mail moving and get deliveries to people as quickly as we can.”
