The bus shelter was smashed but no one was injured

A Royal Mail lorry which mowed down a bus shelter in Canton left no one hurt.

The lorry collided with the bus shelter on Cowbridge Road East on Monday evening.

Residents said the HGV lorry was making a U-turn in the road and went into the shelter despite their calls to stop.

Royal Mail confirmed the lorry belonged to them but declined to comment on the incident. South Wales Police confirmed their officers attended the scene.

Canton councillor Ramesh Patel arrived on the scene after being called by a resident. He said:

"There could've been someone in the bus shelter and I think it's appalling that the driver drove off afterwards. Accidents do happen but the driver could have stopped.

"Some of the residents waited for the police to give a statement. This was the worst kind of damage I have ever seen to a bus shelter."

The shelter has been made safe by Cardiff council. A council spokesperson said:

"The council has a contract for the supply and maintenance of bus shelters throughout the city with Clear Channel, who are also responsible for replacing any damaged shelters. Under the terms of the contract bus shelters must be replaced. Clear Channel have confirmed that the shelter will be replaced within 10 weeks, as each shelter is manufactured to order.

"The damaged shelter has been removed from Cowbridge Road East and the pavement in the vicinity reinstated."
