A FATHER of three said he will never use Royal Mail again after £40 from his daughter's birthday card went missing.

David Molyneaux from Windrush Drive in High Wycombe said he was horrified to discover his post had been cut open on Monday morning.

His 10-year-old daughter, Kayleigh O'Donnell, had been sent £40 from his nan and grandad in first class post but when it arrived the money was missing.

An envelope with account information from high street store Next had also been opened.

The 29-year-old said: “People are losing confidence in Royal Mail any way. We are hoping it is not going to happen again.”

He said he called Royal Mail and they said they would speak to the sorting office where the mail came from and they would call him back. He said he has not heard from them since.

He added: “I won't be using them again. That is it. They are actually going to do nothing about it. Why should we use Royal Mail.

“Kayleigh was very disappointed and upset by it. Her nan has kindly replaced the money in her bank account.”

He said her grandparents did not send the birthday card special delivery, but asked how many people do send cards special delivery and asked why they should have to if the service cannot provide a basic service.

Police confirmed a report of theft or unauthorised taking of mail and it is being investigated.

A Royal Mail spokesman said he should get in touch with customer services again.

As much as I sympathise with their loss, what on earth are they doing sending cash in a card, in this day and age? We have all been advised not to do this for at least two generations (since I was a nipper and I'm nearly 37)...

Noggin you could equally say that you should be able to leave £1000 in cash in the lockers at your local swimming pool....
You could do it...but it would be very foolish and could you expect the owners of the swimming pool to cough up the £1000 when it explicitly warns you not to leave any valuables in the locker?
There is no excuse for theft and i hope the scumbag gets caught but the sender has to take financial responsibility for the loss because they ignored Royal Mail guidelines.
The moral and hopefully legal responsibility lies at the feet of the prick that stole the money.

Problem is fish, that this time of year they are employing many more casuals. Not that some permanent staff are beyond guilt in some of these cases, but £40 I ask you, surely they could have sent a cheque or made the gift in some other secure fashion. Would you send £40 off in an envelope presumably inside a card?

Why would you bother opening someones bank statement?

I do wish people wouldn't post money and then blame us for steeling it. I don't want to be falsey accused of pinching their money because it was ripped out by a machine. I delivered 3 damaged items today: 1 card, 1 junk mail from bank and 1 packet.

I even managed not to steel anything, do I get a bonus?

It had no markings on it at all so i presume it fell out of a present.
When management opened it...it had 3 £20 notes in it and nothing else.
I know someone...somewhere was cursing the thieving posties for stealing their kid's £60.

You could have reported them to IB for opening the mail when it should really have been sent over to the RLC to be opened officially

Quite a number of years ago there was some local concern that mail, particularly cards were being deliberately "damaged". A manager asked me to do a survey on damaged mail received at the DO.................the ratio was quite significant

Twice over the last three years i've sent store gift cards within christmas/birthday cards from a box within the PE area to an address within S81 area and both times the gift card was missing from the card on arrival

Same, my mother used to always send a bday card for little one with a cheque in it, first card sent always went missing. Dunno why, as a cheque was no bloody good to anyone, but it always went missing I actually wondered if someone seen it was an old buddy's writing, therefore more likely to have cash in it?
