Doncaster Mayor hits out at Royal Mail plans

ROYAL Mail has confirmed plans to close the sorting office in Doncaster - prompting criticism from the elected mayor.
Peter Davies said he was disappointed to see the sorting office jobs go to Sheffield following the closure of the Middle Bank office, probably in 2013.

"I am concerned about the workers who will have no alternative but to make a long daily commute to Sheffield.

"Many global brands choose to locate their logistics operations in Doncaster, taking advantage of our strategic advantages, the Royal Mail's decision therefore makes no sense to me.

"Doncaster is in a central location and much better placed than Sheffield, we have excellent road links and a high-speed rail connection."

After five months of consultation Royal Mail has decided that processing work from Doncaster and Hull Mail Centres will transfer to an extended Sheffield Mail Centre.

The Doncaster Delivery Office will relocate to Royal Mail's South Yorkshire Rail Terminal site in Doncaster.

"We are not planning compulsory redundancies. We hope that, given existing turnover rates and with flexibility, everyone who wants to continue to work for Royal Mail will be able to do so. We will be talking to all our staff on an individual basis about the options open to them," said a spokesman.

Whoever makes these decisions is a real idiot! We receive our mail from doncaster and the driver who brings our mail told me that 'Amazon' opened up a special depot a few hundred yards from the mail centre and then the geniuses that are our bosses decide to re locate even though they are one of if not royal mails biggest customer. Guess thats another contract lost due to some lard arse in a office somewhere that has no idea what a high capacity trolley is let alone pushed one in the snow!!!
