Government abandons plans to help Post Office workers

Ten years ago there were almost 20,000 post offices. Today there are 11,700. Virtually every closure over the last few years has been fought by locals, who were well aware that their amenities would suffer as a result, but the bosses of Post Office Limited and the government, which manages its operations, have continued with their closure programme, regardless.Surveys recently carried out not only spell out the costs associated with Post Office closures being greater than thought in previous research, but it also shows that the closures and the resulting poorer service at remaining branches are driving more customers away.

This, along with the loss of key contracts, such as the renewal of the BBC TV licence, over the last decade has slowly eroded the stability of the Post Offices, and, for its workers, made what was a “job for life”, considerably more uncertain.

Now the government has abandoned its original plans to turn the Post Office into a state-backed “People’s Bank”. Although RBS and NatWest customers will be able to use the network for banking, the £1.34 billion pound fund which was earmarked for the establishment of the system will now not be allocated.

As unemployment figures remain high, we can surely expect to see a modern day exodus from rural areas in particular, as young people flock to more populated areas in search of work. If this is the case, then it is likely that more Post Office closures and redundancies will be on the cards.
