The rugs mimic the exact design of the Royal Mail's stamps

The Rug Gallery in St Albans has been given Royal approval to manufacture an exclusive collection of rugs.
The rugs capture the iconic design of Machin's Royal Mail Stamps.

Featuring scalloped edges to mimic the perforations on Royal Mail Postage Stamps, each rug is individually hand made to create a 3D effect.

A license had previously been issued to allow cushions to be produced, however, getting approval for the rugs wasn't a foregone conclusion.

Owner Richard Mathias told the BBC: "I didn't think it would be approved for the floor. 'Standing on the Queen' we'd probably end up in the Tower with our heads chopped off!"

Strictly regulated

Mathias went on to explain how producing the rugs, is strictly regulated.

"We have to do everything by the letter of the law," he said.

"So, for example, when we make a pink version of the rug, it has to have the 16p denomination as it would appear on the actual stamp."

"They also have to be made in perspective; otherwise you get the Queen's head being stretched."
