Royal Mail errors destroying my business, says Coventry OAP

A DISABLED pensioner who set up her own quilt-making business in Coventry just six months ago claims errors by Royal Mail are destroying her venture.

Pat Prior says she has been the victim of a catalogue of errors at the Bishop Street sorting office – where parcels and letters have been lost and delayed repeatedly since May.

Just this week, the 63-year-old grandmother has been forced to travel back and forth from her home in Yarningale Road, Willenhall – despite having painful arthritis and heart problems – after an important parcel was lost by Royal Mail.

But despite several visits to the sorting office, she has been left empty-handed – a problem which is threatening to end her business before it’s even had chance to get off the ground.

Pat said: “I keep hearing the government go on about returning to work and here I am, setting up my own business and Royal Mail are destroying it. Who would buy anything from me if I can’t get the delivery to them?

"The most recent package – which is now lost – was material from a supplier. Without that I cannot make my quilt which has been promised to a customer.”

The most recent problem occurred on Monday, November 1, when a package was due to arrive recorded delivery, but Pat was not at home and the parcel was returned to Bishop Street.

When Pat went that evening to collect the delivery she was told it hadn’t arrived back at the depot. She returned three days later to find there was no trace of the package and it has now been declared lost in the system.

Pat added: “This is not the first time I have had problems with Royal Mail. Orders have been sent out on time, but customers have had long delays in getting the quilts.

“It is incredibly frustrating because I have worked hard on this business and it shouldn’t be too much to ask that the deliveries arrive.

"Now I have to wait 15 days before I can apply for compensation. It is just ridiculous.

"I thought setting up this business would be a good idea because I love craft work, but these problems are just proving too stressful.”

The Bishop Street sorting office, which employs about 1,000 people, was sold in September as part of Royal Mail’s relocation plans.

As well as a new Northamptonshire sorting office, Royal Mail has set up two smaller delivery offices in Coventry, in Blue Ribbon Park, near Phoenix Way and Orchard Retail Park, off London Road.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “We are always sorry to learn when a customer has a problem with any of our services and we are making inquiries.
